ABOUT

History of the Ketchikan–Kanayama Exchange Program

The Ketchikan–Kanayama Exchange Program began in 1986, originally focused on teacher exchanges between the two sister cities. The success of this initial effort led to the launch of annual student exchanges in 1987, further strengthening the cultural and educational ties between Ketchikan, Alaska, and Kanayama, Japan (now part of Gero City).

The exchange was initially a part of the Ketchikan School District. However, in 1989, the Ketchikan Gero Kanayama Exchange Association (KGKEA) was established as a non-profit organization to officially oversee and administer the program. The Association is entirely volunteer-run and is committed to maintaining the quality, integrity, and longevity of the exchange.

Funding for the program is limited, with minimal support from the Ketchikan Gateway Borough and the School District, which typically only covers costs associated with the teacher exchange.

The program’s origins include key visits from city leadership:

  • In November 1986, a delegation from Kanayama—including the Mayor and Superintendent—visited Ketchikan to explore the possibility of a cultural exchange.

  • In March 1987, Ketchikan’s Mayor and Superintendent traveled to Kanayama, officially laying the groundwork for what would become an enduring and impactful international partnership.

Since then, the Ketchikan–Kanayama Exchange has continued annually, enriching the lives of students, educators, families, and communities in both cities.
